This poster collection is the creative response by artist amig@s from Aotearoa to the invitation to design a poster and write a text about a liberator/activist from these islands whose work resonates personally with them.

The designs were printed in the legendary screenprint shop of the ICAIC in Havana, Cuba. The ICAIC printers who have produced seminal posters vital to the Cuban Revolution, and cinema and education since 1959. They use only manual techniques.

The result is a series of 12 posters and texts by:

Jon Bywater, Simon Cuming, Nicola Farquhar, Dion Hitchens, Tessa Laird, Katerina Mataira, Xavier Meade, Te Rita Papesch, Warren Olds, James Ormsby, Jenny Rhodes, Josh Watene & Leafa Wilson.

These posters have already been exhibited in Havana, Cuba; Merida and Oaxaca, Mexico; and in Aotearoa at the Parihaka International Peace Festival and the Whaingaroa/Raglan’s Te Ao Marama Festival.

The Ramp exhibition  also showed for the first time in Aotearoa selected xylographs (plywood prints) from the ASARO (Assembly of Revolutionary Artists from Oaxaca, Mexico).

Libertadores de Aotearoa

Reconocidos artistas y diseñadores de Aotearoa-NZ; Maori & Pakeha (de origen europeo) diseñan un poster para reproducción serigráfica sobre un libertador-a o activista local para ser impesos en la imprenta del ICAIC en la Habana; esta imprenta desde los inicios de la revolución cubana ha producido los carteles que ahora son famosos en el mundo, mucha de su producción aparte de temas socilalistas y educativos ha sido sobre películas cubanas e internacionales. Esta imprenta serigráfica continúa con la misma tecnología con la que comenzaron; con procesos manuales, no fotográficos.

Para la exhibición también se producirán textos biográficos sobre los libertadores y su relevancia histórica; de esta manera se contextualizarán las imágenes, abriendo una ventana hacia la historia de Aotearoa NZ.

La serie consiste de 12 carteles, con un tiraje numerado de 50 c/u impresos con un máximo de cuatro tintas.
